joanie and i were wandering through dillards, looking for a pair of white crop jeans for me. they are on the second floor which requires the use of an escalator. i like escalators. unlike an elevator, they are open and freeing. you're not jammed in like a sardine.
so i hop on first with joanie right behind me. i open my wallet looking for the business card of the only wily woman in the state who can fit me properly . . . but a receipt i need falls to the floor . . . the moving floor because we're on a escalator.
i turn around and lean down to try and grab it and miss. i try again but by now it seems i have run out of escalator. my heels have run into the non-moving departure step but my balance is still moving. arms flying, pocketbook flapping, body twitching, i right myself just before i would have face planted in front of a bevy of shoppers. i am in one piece. my esteem is not. i need a keeper.
*****
just got in from my meeting with the good doctor. as i check facebook, i realize i am tired. not enough sleep last night. i curl into a ball, pull up my favorite blankie and try to snooze. suddenly, i hear a pop downstairs. kidlet is in class. ignore the noise. another pop. i do a cat count. all three are snoozing with me. head down on pillow. pillow smells faintly of something unpleasant. ignore the aroma. pop. ignore. pop. pop. brain wakes up. holy hell, i have forgotten about the seven eggs i popped into water and set to boil on the stove. fly downstairs. no water in the pan. scorched exploded eggs. i need a keeper.

Poor Jeanne! Hope you got some rest last night.
Nah! No keeper needed. Just a little more sleep and a capacity to appreciate eggs as the ancient Chinese preserved them!
