into the darkness . . . .

in the middle of the night i fought from a deep sleep as i heard a vague, "mom" and then a more urgent, "mama".  and there was kidlet standing next to my bed.  kidlet who had spent the last 24 hours back in the depths of depression.  her plaintive voice asked for help.  she was once again engulfed in the throes. she needed to know what to do.  i told her to grab one of her Ativan.  "and then what?" she wailed.  and then what indeed, i wondered.  i held open the coverlet to my bed.  it worked when she was little, would it work when she was 24?

minutes later, she was spooned in, her body racked with sobs.  when she calmed down, i asked her where Simon was.  "they held him down and mugged him." she replied, still sniffling.  "i will be your Simon, until he comes back." I replied.  hoping that i could be.

sometime before dawn, she rose from my bed, and tiptoed toward her room.  i asked why and she said she was hot, but felt better and thanked me for being her Simon.

this is a vicious disease. a devastating monster.  as i lay here in bed, i wonder what this day will bring and hope she finds a ray of sunshine.

i'm just being mean . . .

my ability to remember to take a shot of dinner is in direct proportion to my degree of salivation.  consequently, there are no photos of the grilled, fresh swordfish brushed with a little EVOO and salt and pepper . . . served with just a sliver of butter and fresh lemon juice, nor are there shots of oven roasted taters and onions, nor two huge steamed artichokes with sides of butter.  a feast i tell you.  and absolutely no proof, she said, trying valiantly to suck in her  rather distended tummy.  slurp.

in an unexpected burst of energy, i washed my car.  i thought it would be nice if i could see out the greatly smirched windows.  i also needed to remove the eggnog flavored shake that somehow splattered down the side of the door after leaving the Steak and Shake drive thru one day last month, to say nothing of the intestinal distressed pelican who baptized the trunk.  yes, Virginia, there is a downside to living in paradise. but since the miata is girth challenged, it takes just splash of water, a couple of drops of soap and very little effort to make the old girl shine.

meanwhile, the recycling truck came by while i was splashing in the suds and the guy wished me a 'happy summer'.  gotta love how joyful the weather makes us all feel.  i really am sorry if you are stuck in a snow drift with icicles hanging from your nose.  i remember those days.  not fun unless you are still in elementary school.

so between yoga, lunch and nice long nap, it was a very good day.  a very good day indeed.

hey mister . . .

since we ran out of propane for the gas grill, i decided i could fix it by my lonesome.  i googled a video, removed the empty tank, inserted the new one and ta-da!!!!  i was back in business.  but i am a scaredy cat so i texted Joanie to see if her hubby would, at his convenience, come make sure i did it correctly and was not about to send myself to the moon the first time i used it.

in the meantime, i headed to the driveway to cut the dead nozzle off of the hose and replace it with the new coupling i bought at ACE.  i managed to saw off the head . . . and yes it took a saw . . . and was trying to insert the whatsit when i heard a voice telling me i had it in backwards.   joanie's mister grabbed the pieces and in two seconds flat, i had a new working nozzle.  thanks, mister.

he headed to the pool deck while we played with the hose.  after assuring me i had changed out the tank correctly . . . yay me . . . he walked back out front and noticed my stumps.  you know, the ones left over from the aborted bush bash that resulted in a broken water main . . .

and that was when this happened:
five times over.  or was it six.  there were roots and stumps galore.  they are all now down at the end of the driveway awaiting pickup.  i don't know why, but this was so much fun to watch!!!!

and then he noticed a broken sprinkler . . .  he fixed that too!!!!

thank you joanie for the use of your amazing mister and your awesome jeep driving skills.  don't i have the best neighbors!!!!

winner. winner. chicken dinner.

back to chicken 101 and a recipe shared by an old friend . . .  a fat free version of chicken marsala:
we've been eating this recipe for the last ten years.  well, Kidlet and i have . . . the 9TS was more of a meat and potatoes/anything Italian kind of guy.  i often made two meals for dinner.

but to start this one, it helps if you can go in the backyard and grab a couple/three Meyers lemons straight from the tree:
and actually, it is very late in the season.  the lemons are a little soft still but very juicy.

then it is just a question of sauteing the chicken drenched in seasoned flour in olive oil until brown, removing it from the heat and adding crimini mushrooms, the lemon juice, parsley, chicken broth and of course Marsala wine.  add the chicken back in and let it all simmer and plate over linguini.  slurp.  nothing like an old favorite.

marshmallows, raw meat and victory . . .

wednesday morning, about fifteen minutes after Kidlet had turned on the heat to get the chill out of the house, i was lazing in bed when Pip put one paw on my shoulder and pointed her little snoot in the air and sniffed . . . like a pig hunting truffles.  busy little nose.  while i was fascinated with her newest behavior, i realized as i inhaled, there was a particularly acrid smell to the air.  i sniffed again.  Pip looked at me perplexedly.  i jumped off the bed and sniffed some more.  definitely an burning electric type smell.  i called kidlet.  as she sniffed, her eyebrows raised.  something was afoot.

after checking all the outlets and various electronics, i popped my head into the attic.  nothing.  the obvious thing to do was to turn off the heat and wait and see.  the smell wafted away but my worry didn't.  i called the a/c company.

yesterday the tech appeared and i explained the dilemma.  after my bout with the alarm guy, i was certain he was going to tell me there was nothing wrong . . . but there was.  the emergency heat strips had shorted and burned out.  yikes.  thankfully, since the system is less than a year old, parts and labor are all covered.  more importantly, it did not start a fire.  i repacked the marshmallows.  the new parts will be in next week.

                                                                     *******

the 9TS was in charge of both the pool and the grill.  he refused to share responsibility.  the pool being the more urgent of the two, i promptly called a local company and arranged for a pool care class.  except for a few unexpected algae 'blooms', things have been going swimmingly . . . .  sorry, i couldn't resist.  but for the last few months, i have been telling Kidlet, one of these days we are going to end up with a half cooked dinner.  tonight was the night.  the gas sputtered and died halfway through the flank steak.  i slapped that puppy on a quickly heated cast iron skillet and plopped it into the oven to finish it off.  now i need a 'how to change the gas tank' class.  oh Joanie!?!?!?   is Eddie available????

                                                                     ********

as you may recall, Kidlet has temporarily moved back home to do battle with some mental health issues  . . . mainly depression.  it's a mine field and tricky.  the meds that may have worked for months or years, can all of a sudden fail . . .  as in one day they work and the next they don't.  a new protocol is required.  after six weeks, this newest round of meds is finally taking hold and she has drawn her own battle lines.

she will not allow any nicknames for depression.  she refuses to trivialize it and give it strength.  it is what it is . . . a disease that lies.  it tells you things that aren't true.  it tells you, you are not loveable. it tells you, you are stupid and ugly and undeserving.

Kidlet has come up with a strategy.  remember the old children's game:  Simon Says?  when depression tells her a lie, she turns to Simon  . . . and Simon, that little pillar of inner strength, says, "not true. fight."  so this morning depression told her to roll over and go back to bed.  in turn, Simon said, "get up, get dressed and run."  so for the first time in a very long time, Kidlet not only left the house of her own accord, but took off running, jogging, walking and sprinting and four miles later, returned home triumphant.  yay for the human spirit.  i am so proud of Kidlet.

not one for the yearbook . . .

since i broke the news to kidlet that meat would now be a once a week option . . . yes, her sad little meat loving jaw hit the floor . . . i've decided to try a new recipe every seven days to broaden our horizons and when you read this one, that's not all that is going to broaden.

so i went on a hunt for new recipes and found what looked to be a great pasta carbonara.  according to its rating system, it ranked an amazing five star average out of 57 votes.  that's pretty darn good as averages go so i bought all of the fixin's and hit the kitchen.

seriously, what is not to love about chicken, bacon . . . bacon is not meat . . . mushrooms, garlic, pasta, parmesan????  so i boiled the fettuccine,  fried the bacon, sauteed the mushrooms, diced the garlic, added salt, pepper and parsley along with the half and half and butter,  . . . i told you things were going to broaden . . . added the cheese. warmed. tossed. plated:

yummo, right!

wrong.  oh dear glorious gods of the culinary persuasion,  why hath thou forsaken me?  how can anything that looks so good and smells so glorious be so . . . so . . . utterly . . . inedible?  kidlet bravely forged through picking out bits of chicken but both plates ended up back in the kitchen much the same as they had left. no good.  not good at all.

OK, so it ain't going to make our list of "do agains".  not now. not ever.  bleck!

in other news, i ran errands today.  i'm still trying to track down a bottle of Colavita Extra Virgin Roasted Garlic Olive Oil.  still no luck.  i don't think our little burg is ever going to see the likes of that.  but as i wandered around Ace Hardware with a project list in mind, a VERY nice assistant named Dot asked if i needed any help.  i hate the box stores.  before i can even stutter out the principles of my dilemma, their people are giving me the hairy eyeball and looking for someone a little less challenged to help, but not Dot.  that's what i love about my neighborhood ACE.  anyway, she understood my sign language for a new coupling for the hose and handed me the right goodie telling me to be sure and wait til it warms up outside or use a hair dryer to warm the hose and no i don't need a saw, a sharp knife will do, and WD-40 or petroleum jelly would be good.  she also gave me her staunch opinion on hose heads.  finally she sent me skittering down aisle seven for a spray bottle.  done.  as i stood paying for my deal-ios, i thought her boss should know just how helpful she was.  i tracked down Troy and started off explaining my shtick about ineptitude,  widowhood and her helpfulness when what to my total dismay, big fat wet tears leaked out of my eyeballs and dripped waywardly down my face.  oh dear Lord, i really have turned into that crazy woman. then Troy's eyes filled.  WTF?

i'm not much of a crier but every once in a while, at the least slothful filled times, out they come.  usually and thankfully, mostly at home.  not at the corner hardware store in front of God, Troy and that very plump fix-it guy who desperately needed to hike up his jeans.  it's like a rain shower on a cloudless day.  no one expects it.  i ran to the car, smashed my foot on the gas pedal and hightailed it out of the parking lot.  thankfully, i fared better in the pet food store.

cracked . . .

the house alarm system has been a little wonky of late.  it works.  but it spits out numbers i don't have from zones that don't exist.  normally this is not a problem but the other day, i had inadvertently left a window open and while the system usually tells me which contact is broken, this time it threw out numbers like a stuttering mad scientist.  it was time to get it checked.

just like a meddlesome car that fails to replicate its complaint while in the shop, my alarm system behaved itself this morning when the tech came to look at it.  i told the tech, it was probably going to have a little party as soon as he leaves and act up again.  he gave me that look.

you know the look.  the one that says, "are you quite mad?".  so i explained the simile of the car.  he hesitantly nodded.

i soldiered on.  "they are probably planning the party now.  i can just hear their happy little voices."  with that, he looked me right in the eye and asked, "do you often hear voices."

i could tell this wasn't going well.

anyway, he reset the panel just in case.  he called in for an alarm check, just in case. and he ran out the door, just in case.

sigh.

now and then . . .

i got attacked by germs.  sniff.  cough.  gurgle.  so i have spent the last few days snorking happily under the covers with my laptop.

look at the 9TS at age 6 and again at 68:
gotta love a sloth no matter the age . . .

all better . . .

remember this?
this was joanie's backyard after the fire.

lookie! lookie!
all put back together again.  better than ever.  come this summer it will have all sorts of herbs.  especially basil.  lots and lots of basil.  right joanie?!?!  there is a little more planting to go as soon as mother nature gives the go ahead, but isn't it fabulous!!!!

call me klutz . . .

being the absolutely gorgeous day it was today, i decided to don a pair of shorts and a tee and work on the pool deck for a bit.  it's embarrassing how grungy and green it had become since fall.   kidlet came out to soak up some afternoon warmth and keep me company.

my first snag was realizing the hose was still out front from the water main debacle. i dragged the kinked and grimy monster back to the deck and tried to figure out how it had been attached to its storage wheel.  it seems pliers were required, which in turn required a pound of flesh.  i shook my damaged knuckles and jammed them in my mouth.  as kidlet helped me un-kink the snake on the deck, i finally got it hooked up and wound around the wheel only to realize it was ass backwards.  you know, like toilet paper.  it needs to unroll from the top not from the bottom . . . well, at least in my world.

as soon as i turned on the faucet, i realized the head was in the open position and aimed straight at me.  ten minutes on the deck and i was already soaked. this did not bode well.  and, i managed to try and drown myself two more times while bleaching and brushing just one section of deck.  call me klutz.  i promise i will answer.

finally with that one large section of deck clean and three table tops free of mold, i decided i needed a break.  hose running, i wandered over to the tap to turn off the water but not before i was once again drenched.  huh?  seems the hose head had malfunctioned and separated from the end of the connector thingy that screws onto the hose itself.  there i was with water pouring out all over me.  i turned off the water, reattached the head and tried again.  this time the head literally blew off and i could hear kidlet guffawing from her perch on the lounger.  is there no dignity?

i may not be the brightest crayon in the pack but i know when to say uncle.  i spent the rest of the afternoon sprawled in the shade enjoying the warm winter breeze.  life as it should be.

tippity-tap, the tags are back . . .

So my EHD has been a little wonky lately.  As in it firmly stated that its contents could not be reinstated.  Well, surprise, it fixed itself but being the non-trusting soul that I am, I went out and bought a new one.  It was easy to transfer all of my digi images to the new drive but my tagging system went berserk.  I asked for help from every source I knew.  I checked YouTube.  I Googled. I found some excellent resource centers but they still couldn't explain why the program I use was still reading from the old drive, thus invalidating the tags.  Make sense???  Not to me either. So I re-tagged all 734 kits or roughly 10,000 tags.  Color my fingers tapped out.

But now I get to play:
and have fun.  and forget about the real world.

it's a colorful thing . . .

One of Kidlet's Christmas presents turned out to be a duplicate so we schlepped back to Barnes and Noble to return one.  While she checked out the crochet books, I was headed to the food section but not before a book by Brenna Maloney called Sock It to Me grabbed my feeble attention and and the cockles of my black pitted heart.

What is more appealing than some nefarious creatures made from those knitted creations designed to keep your feet warm?  Why exactly did I feel compelled to peruse said book?  I was forced into it.  As soon as I realized one of the options was  . . . . .  wait for it . . . .  a SLOTH, I was hooked.

The book has now been sitting on my shelf for a couple of days, waiting for a moment of illustrious energy to hit.  This morning, being cold and rainy seemed like the perfect time.

I rummaged through my not meager sock collection and came up with a very fuzzy pair of knee socks.  Knowing my penchant for flubbing first attempts, I started with something other than the proposed sloth . . .  the chameleon.

As I gathered thread, batting, pipe cleaners, scissors, pen, forceps and such, I spent a couple of hours manufacturing my beastie.  And yes, I messed up the directions.  Of course I did.  So instead of having the 'thing' chameleons have on their heads, mine has antennae.  Never seen antennae on a chameleon?  Then you're not looking hard enough because they are there.  I swear . . . she said looking down at her crossed fingers.

And so, here she is.  Connie Chameleon, in all of her glory:
She was so much fun to make and looks oh so much sweeter now then on my feet.  It was a good morning in the cave.
